Have you seen the MTV documentary series "Catfish?" MTV’s show Catfish reveals the truth and lies abut online dating. A "catfish" is a person who creates fake personal profiles on social media sites using someone else's pictures and false biographical information to pretend to be someone else. These "catfish" often intend to trick an unsuspecting person into forming a relationship with them. The term "catfish" is derived from the title of a 2010 documentary, in which filmmaker Schulman discovers that the woman with whom he'd been involved in on an online relationship had not been honest in describing herself.
The film’s producers Schulman and Joseph seek to help people who are emotionally intertwined with someone they have never met in real life. Each episode is an investigation into whether or not the other participant in the virtual relationship is legitimate or if they are a "catfish".
The show aims to discover the true identity of these users as the producers travel to their homes using background check and research to uncover the truth. A face-to-face meeting is arranged between the two virtual lovers as the show documents how both people are impacted. The directors want to know why the catfish is doing what they are doing, who they are, what they feel, what led them to this place, and more so, why that resonates with thousands of other young people who have the same feelings, who also don't have someone to talk to or don't know how to express themselves.
